On September 16th, Action For Children and Voices for Ohio's Children celebrated Step Up For Kids Day, a non-partisan, nationwide effort to draw attention to issues affecting America's children. They hosted a free advocacy and media training in Columbus on September 16th at the YWCA in Columbus, OH from 10 a.m. -3 p.m. This training included:
• A presentation from Abby Levine with the Alliance for Justice on the Legal Dos and Don'ts for Non-profits • Lunch discussion with Cathy Candisky, The Columbus Dispatch and Jo Ingles, Ohio Public Radio where attendees learned the “insider” tips on working with the media and getting your story covered. • Rebecca Wilson, Strategic Communications Consultant helped attendees understand the benefits of spending time on communications planning; as well as identifying your organization’s existing communications assets; and providing you with the basic tools to build a communications plan and a crisis communications plan. • To wrap up the training, Yvonne C. Hunnicutt with Voices for Ohio’s Children gave the tools and information you need to advocate for better public policy on the issues that affect Ohio’s children and families. Attendees learned: basic legislative information; strategies for communicating and working with policy makers. All of the materials from the training are available from this site. Share information with them about why it is important for them to raise their voices with policy makers. • Register to vote. • Write a letter to the editor thanking elected officials for supporting Ohio’s kids.
