Gun Access Position Paper

The Coalition for Greater Cleveland's Children supports gun access legislation, and therefore is opposed to conceal and carry weapons laws. The Coalition for Greater Cleveland's Children represents over 70 government, forprofit, and non-profit organizations with the common goal of representing the best interests of children. The natural curiosity of children can lead to devastating consequences if they come across a loaded weapon. It would be not in the best interest of children if Ohio's citizens were permitted to carry a concealed and loaded weapon. Residents of the State of Ohio may own and carry a gun. This right is without question and is granted by the Constitution. However, for the safety of children, the Coalition for Greater Cleveland's Children believe those guns should be stored safely and carried openly. The Coalition supports the use of trigger locks to prevent child injury, and promotes their free distribution whenever possible. A study recently conducted by The Pediatric Trauma Center at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital found that in the Cleveland and East Cleveland areas, “residents reported they would use trigger locks or lock boxes if they were offered free of charge.” 5
