Voices Advances Effort to Educate Medicaid Recipients, Health Coverage for Kids

10-03-2006 - Voices has been active lately on a number pressing children’s issues regarding Medicaid eligibility requirements and the number of uninsured children in our state. New proof of citizenship requirements to qualify for Medicaid have put many children at risk of losing the essential health care they need. Voices has been trying to educate the public through and aggressive communications and outreach effort so they are aware of these new requirements. Public Policy Director Mary Wachtel was a featured commentator on several radio news broadcasts speaking on the topic including an interview with NPR statehouse reporter Karen Kasler. Voices has also teamed with Families USA in handling the Ohio release of their report on uninsured children. The report received broad press coverage including a feature article in The Columbus Dispatch which included commentary from Mary Wachtel. Voices will continue to highlight the problem of uninsured children in Ohio and work to reinforce the perception that some of the State’s practices in its attempts to cover these kids is working. The SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program), the federal program that funds states to extend health coverage to children, is up for reauthorization next year and this press effort will help pave the way an effective advocacy campaign in 2007.
