The American economy is facing a serious downturn, and we must find ways to ease the impact on millions of American children. The President recently signed a bipartisan economic stimulus package to create jobs here at home, put recovery rebates into the hands of Americans struggling with rising costs, and to jumpstart our economy as quickly as possible.
At the insistence of House Democrats, included in the stimulus package is a one-time, temporary extension of the child tax credit. Under the agreement, families with children will receive a child tax credit this year if they had $3,000 in earnings, which is unprecedented considering that families currently need $11,750 of income to qualify for the current child tax credit. The stimulus package is the latest work of this Congress on behalf of America’s children and families. Since last year’s National Summit on America’s Children (convened by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and co-chaired by Chairman George Miller and Reps. Rosa DeLauro and Chaka Fattah), at which national experts met to discuss scientific findings and how they relate to early childhood development, the 110th Congress has passed key legislation to provide a better future for our children. In early January, House Democratic Leaders convened a health care forum with experts and academics from across the nation to discuss improvements to our health care system that will help ensure more children have a healthier start. We continue to work to improve child nutrition and expand affordable housing. Despite the President’s intransigence, we will continue to fight for expansion of the children’s health program (SCHIP) to insure 10 million children, including 4 million children who are eligible now, but not enrolled. The full report of the National Summit on America’s Children, “Pathways from Brain Research to Policy,” is available along with an executive summary. Throughout the year, Speaker Nancy Pelosi's website will be updated with information relating to the health and well-being of America’s children. |
