President Bush turns his back on nearly 145,000 Ohio childrenOctober 3, 2007— Today, Voices for Ohio’s Children condemned President Bush’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Both Senator Sherrod Brown and twelve of Ohio’s U.S. House of Representatives members, Republicans and Democrats, supported the bill in Congress. “Today President Bush turned his back not only on Ohio’s 145,000 children enrolled in SCHIP, but also on Ohio’s bipartisan leaders who say that covering kids with SCHIP is the best thing for our state,” said Voices for Ohio’s Children Executive Director Amy Swanson. “Ohio’s children need SCHIP so they can grow up to be healthy and strong, and become productive citizens,” continued Swanson. “Today we learned that, for the President, political gamesmanship is more important that the well-being of children. We call on members of Congress from both political parties to recognize the urgency of children’s health coverage and the public’s overwhelming support for SCHIP by overriding the President’s veto.” In addition to making phone calls and writing letters to legislators, Voices launched a "Thank You Ad Campaign" picturing Emily Demko, to run in various news publications across the state.
