Speaking at the briefing will be Diane Bennett, Director of the Ohio Afterschool Network; Canal Winchester Mayor Jeff Miller; Leslie Moss, Director of Athens County’s Kids on Campus program; and the parent of a participant in the Boys and Girls Clubs afterschool program. This briefing is designed to educate legislators, their staff, the media and key policy makers about the impact of afterschool on youth, families and communities, who uses afterschool programs, how they are funded and opportunities to strengthen them. Afterschool programs can be the difference between success and failure for young people. Numerous research studies show they have a positive impact on the safety of youth by reducing the rate at which they commit or are victims of crime in the dangerous after-school hours of 3-6 pm, improve school attendance, performance, homework completion and graduation rates, while making it possible for parents to work without concerns for their children’s safety.
